OFF SNOW REVIEW:
FIRST LOOK:
Upon first look the Screamer looks big, but comfy. It is evident that there
is plenty of padding in this helmet but I worry about the way it will look on
my head. Nothing in particular grabs my attention, as it seems to blend in with
most of the other helmets. I appreciate the subtle styling that keeps it conservatively
classy while still Screaming the need for speed.
COMFORT: 4 - There is an ample supply of padding in this helmet which
makes for a comfy fit. The lining is a brushed fleece, which will keep the wearer
cozy and warm while really minimizing the irritation on the forehead.
FIT: 4 - I have a pretty low volume head so it rides a bit low and puts
some pressure on my ears. The earflaps, although bulky, don't dig in as they
do on many other helmets. I appreciate the sewn in brushed fleece on the strap.
It doesn't come all of the way across but provides enough protection that the
buckle can't rub the face.
STYLE: 2 - It's a good-looking helmet but once on my head the volume
is too large for my preference. Have you seen Space Balls the movie? I won't
go so far as to say that it's that outrageous but it certainly looks large on
the head. This is due to all of the comfy padding, which could probably be minimized
substantially to make the helmet look sleeker.
FEATURES: 3 - The goggle retention strap is among the best I've seen.
Sure a straps a strap, but Salomon has taken the time to engineer the helmet
with some added grip where your goggle band will rest to ensure minimal movement.
The venting worries me. As this is an off snow review, it's hard so say how
well it'll work when moving but as some one that stays very warm as is, I don't
know that I could cool off enough wearing this helmet. The Screamer meets the
CE standard, which is the reason for very minimal venting, but there's got to
be a way to get more airflow in this helmet.
CONCERNS: Too Big and Too Warm!
COLOR: 3 - I believe this helmet is only available in Blue and Black,
which limits individual preference, but they are nice looking colors so the
wearer won't be disappointed.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: 3.5 - The Screamer is a better than average helmet
with a TON of potential. The color is nice, the comfort is great, and the engineering
is certainly on the right track. The only thing from keeping this helmet from
receiving a higher score is the size at it appears on the head and the minimal
venting. I hope this is one step in an evolution that could create a great helmet.
FIRST LOOK:
Pretty cool looking helmet. Very sleek looking. Looks like a racer type helmet
for a fast skier! Looks really big and heavy though.
COMFORT: I would give this helmet a 5 for the comfort rating. It fits
my head perfectly on all sides, and it isn't too tight over the ears. The padding
is really comfortable and soft and it's not too much.
FIT: 5. This helmet fits my oval shaped head perfectly. The earflaps
do tend to come down a little more on the face compared to the Giro S4 helmet,
but it doesn't squeeze my face too tight, so it's not a problem for me. The
chinstrap fits me better than the S4 too. It doesn't "choke" me it sits right
underneath my chin.
STYLE: For style I give this a 3 ½. I think it looks ridiculous on me.
It makes me look like I have a HUGE head! I don't like that. But other than
that it is a really cool looking helmet. I like the sleek look of it, and the
half logo on the front is pretty nice. Colors are pretty plain.
FEATURES: 4 There are not very many features that I noticed on this helmet.
There is one vent on the top of the helmet with a slide open/close tab. It didn't
look like it would cool me off as much as the Giro helmets on those warm days.
There are removable earflaps, but they are not very easy to remove. I would
have to take my helmet off in order to remove them. It has an adjustable goggle
retention strap. I thought that was pretty neat because I haven't seen that
on any other helmets yet.
CONCERNS: The only concern I have is that is this helmet going to keep
my head cool enough on those warm days? I worry that it may not be enough ventilation.
COLOR: There are only two colors to choose from, black and navy blue.
So, if you like the helmet, but don't like the colors, you're pretty much stuck
with black or blue.
OVERALL THOUGHTS: 4- I was pleasantly surprised at how well this helmet
fit my head. I would definitely wear this helmet if it didn't make my head look
like a huge bowling ball! It was amazingly comfortable, and would be great for
keeping your head warm on those cold days, but not so sure about cooling it
off on those warm days. The chin strap was really comfortable too. I thought
it fit me perfectly and the padding went underneath the strap and the snap buckles,
so you don't feel any of that.
First Look:
The Screamer
is just a little more than your basic ski helmet in design. I like this no frills
approach. I'm not too hot on the glossy finish, as it tends to pick up finger
prints. Minor, I know. What makes it little more than your basic design?
its air vent and its defined goggle band. I'm not quite sure about the goggle
retention strap. The way it's designed, it looks like it could cause some problems
by breaking with age. The venting system is cool looking, but it appears that
it will have trouble doing its job on warm days. The two vents are just too
small, but if you're never sliding in warm weather than who needs vents, right?
Fit:
While
the XL (test helmet) is actually too big for me, it seems to have a comfortable
fit. There's plenty of padding throughout the interior. I was a little taken
aback when I first noticed the crown liner. It was a little off, which lead
me to believe that it was flawed during production, but not the case. The crown
liner is actually removable. This is a cool feature because it enables you to
wash anytime you want, really nice as it gets later in the season and no one
will stand close to you in the lift lines because your helmet stinks. Between
the thick padding and fact that the Screamer is a full helmet, meaning that
it comes down below the ears, causes the helmet to be a little bulky. I much
prefer a half helmet that's a little more compact. Overall though, the Screamer
carries with it an extremely comfortable fit.
Final Thoughts:
If I
were going to buy a ski helmet based solely on comfort alone, the Screamer would
problem be on my top three list. The fit is excellent for an oval head like
mine. However, I, like the most of us, take appearance into consideration as
well, and this helmet is on the low end when it comes to this. I would have
to compare it to a Cadillac. The ride is top notch, and it's definitely not
sleek like a BMW.
